From my 2026 solo show "The Winter of our Discontent," in which I paired my paintings of the Log Lady from the David Lynch show 'Twin Peaks' with a sound element - voicemails from 50+ American women and people AFAB, giving their opinion of JD Vance's infamous "childless cat ladies" statements.

In the backdrop of these Log Lady pieces I included a gamut of symbolism, including witchery, Woody Guthrie's phrase "This machine kills fascists,” suffragism, Ruth Bader Ginsberg's iconic collars, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

“All of you fascists bound to lose (Woody Guthrie)” (2025)
Woody Guthrie (1912-1967) was an American singer, songwriter, and composer widely considered one of the most significant figures in American folk music. His 1954 song "Old Man Trump” describes the racist housing practices and discriminatory rental policies of his landlord, Fred Trump, father of President Donald Trump.

He famously started writing "This machine kills fascists" on his guitars in 1943. They say he borrowed the phrase from workers in an American factory supplying the Allied war effort during World War II, who wrote it on their lathes.

Guthrie believed that music, like culture, has the power to defeat right-wing extremists and their antidemocratic ideas rooted in xenophobia, racism, homophobia, and sexism. He fought back using ideas, language, music, and the shared desire to build a better future together. The "This machine kills fascists" message became linked to his guitar, and to his purpose.

He wrote many songs about America’s Depression-era “Dust Bowl,” and the background of this painting is a recreation of a Dust Bowl photo by famous documentary photographer Margaret Bourke-White. This depressing shot of Colorado farmland appeared in a LIFE magazine photo essay in May 1954, entitled “Dusty Plague Upon the Land.” (I included handwriting in the background - lyrics of Woody Guthrie songs.)
